Dogs to aid in water rescues

Dog and Puppy Training, Dogs in the News No Comments »

Dogs aiding in water rescue - seems like a fabulous idea! Most dogs love the water and would fare well in a situation where they were going into the water to help rescue someone who is drowning. That’s exactly what’s happening in Italy - dogs are being trained to go in a helicopter, jump from the ‘copter and help to rescue someone in peril on the water.

Well now, that’s very interesting indeed! I love the idea of using our furry friends to help in rescue situations, and you know that there are certainly plenty of dog breeds that would love this type of work! I know for a fact that my Retriever would LOVE to be involved in anything having to do with water, and that she’s smart enough to take the rigorous training that is required of these dogs to learn such skills.

Parvo virus still a threat

Dog diseases, Dogs in the News No Comments »

Parvo virus is a disease that affects dogs and there is a vaccine for it. However, there are still outbreaks of Parvo virus throughout the world, as you can read in the article from Santa Ana, California below.

Vaccinations are available to protect your dog against this virus. Vaccinations are important or you could find yourself learning a very tough lesson. I had a dog, whose name was Pumpkin, who contracted Parvo virus. Thankfully, we caught it early enough that it was treated. However, he was never really the same after that. He had the ’shakes’, similar to human Parkinson’s Disease. He was really lucky to live through that. I have all my dogs vaccinated now - I never want to go through that again with any of my beloved animals.

Dogs can dance

Happy Dogs, Dogs in the News No Comments »

Yes, it’s true, dogs can dance and they can easily learn how to dance different styles of dancing that goes with the music being played. You can teach your dog to dance just like you teach it to sit, stay, come and fetch. Not only that, but dancing is also exercise - and we all know that exercise is good for your dog.

Interesting, isn’t it, that dogs can enjoy and partake in a popular pasttime like dancing? What do you think about dancing dogs? Are we forcing them to learn something as a parlor trick only or could a dog really enjoy the physical activity that dancing provides?

Violent end for rapper’s dogs

Stop Dog Abuse, Dogs and Celebrities, Dogs in the News No Comments »

Dogs died violently - that’s the headline. DMX’s dogs died violently however they aren’t sure whether the rapper was responsible for the ‘grievous injuries’ to his three dogs or not. The dogs were discovered buried in the back yard when someone tipped officials off about >animal abuse. Is he responsible?

Well, considering that officials found and took 12 half-starved pit bulls from the same home…well, even if he didnt cause the grievous injuries to the dogs, he is still responsible for the safety and well being of those animals.

Legislating dog breeds - yes or no?

Dogs in the News 1 Comment »

Dog attacks are serious, we all know that. However, with recent dog attacks in France, the government is considering adopting a dangerous dogs act. Does this actually do anything to help? To me, it feels a little like painting every dog of a certain breed with one brush. Is that a fair thing to do, or are we being prejudiced on certain breeds? It’s true that you rarely hear of a Basset Hound attacking a child or a Golden Retriever - it seems that there are some dogs that are more prone to attack than others, but does that mean that all dogs of a certain breed are going to attack someone at some point in time? Let me know what you think! Email me at stephanie (at) wheredogsmeet (dot) com.

People Signing Up Their Dogs to Vote

Dogs in the News No Comments »

The following story may seem a little strange - a woman who signed her dog up to vote in the election, however I happen to agree with her. She says she did it to prove how incredibly easy it is for non-residents of the United States to register and vote, and she has a point. If she got her dog registered to vote by simply putting her phone in the dog’s name, anyone could do something similar and equally as easy.

Imagine a country where people could visit, register and vote, without being citizens of the country at all. Seems to me that it is asking for a world of problems and inviting in danger. A strong system of checks and balances should be in place, as it is here in Canada. Now, I’m not saying that something like this is possible in Canada, however I certainly have never heard of a dog being registered to vote. As a native Canadian, I know the process I must go through to vote. They send me a letter in the mail that has my name, address and social insurance number on it. I must present this letter to the voting place along with my driver’s license, when I am verified, then I am given a slip and sent to a private booth.Perhaps it’s time for the United States, and other countries, to take a hard look at their system of checks and balances and who they are allowing to vote in their public and political arenas.Read the rest of the article, click the link below.

Police Dogs Die Due to Neglect and Human Error

Dogs in the News No Comments »

A Belgian Malinois`It’s just like people to get busy and forget - think about how many times you’ve been on your way to do something and then gotten sidetracked by something else. Eventually you remember what you were on your way to do, but what happens when that ’something’ leads to the death of a dog

In the story that follows, you will see that a second police dog died this week after being left unattended in a police patrol car, this comes on the heels of a police dog death where the officer left his dog in the patrol car for over 12 hours.

It is a sad state of affairs when we allow those police dogs; that serve us, that have no voice of their own or way to protect themselves from this type of cruelty and behavior on the part of humans, to die at the hands of those they work with and serve with.
