It’s important that your dog understand you - most importantly the difference between getting in trouble and being praised. The key way to have your dog understand whether they are being good or bad is to change your voice.

Step Six – Change Your Voice

When you issue a command to your dog, you should use a deep, stern voice. Your dog will not necessarily understand what you are saying most of the time, but when you issue a command in a deeper, sterner voice, they will notice the pitch and tone change of your voice. By switching to this lower voice, your dog will pay attention to what you are saying.

When you are praising your puppy, change your voice again to a happy, high pitched ‘baby cooing’ voice, ensuring that you use his name a lot and incorporate squealing sounds of happiness. Yes, you will sound silly to other humans, but your dog will love it. Encouraging good behavior is as important, if not more important that disciplining for bad behavior, so be sure you are always praising your dog when he does a good job.
