Dog attacks are serious, we all know that. However, with recent dog attacks in France, the government is considering adopting a dangerous dogs act. Does this actually do anything to help? To me, it feels a little like painting every dog of a certain breed with one brush. Is that a fair thing to do, or are we being prejudiced on certain breeds? It’s true that you rarely hear of a Basset Hound attacking a child or a Golden Retriever - it seems that there are some dogs that are more prone to attack than others, but does that mean that all dogs of a certain breed are going to attack someone at some point in time? France To Adopt Its Own Dangerous Dogs Act

A series of dog attacks in France have lead to intensified debate regarding French dog law. The French government is currently re-draughting legislation to ban certain types of dogs.

With a ten-year-old girl dead after an attack by two dogs in a house just outside Paris, and a glut of other attacks making the news, French law makers are in the process of reworking the existing law that applies to dogs.

Interior Minister Michelle Alliot Marie commented:

“The first thing we’re going to to do is organise training for owners. Secondly, we’re going to require some dogs be certified by a vet after they’ve been registered. And I want to put in place stricter import controls.”

Opponents to the proposed move have cited feasibility issues as the main problem, claiming that breeds cannot be classified as dangerous. The same opponents have called for a ban on private trading of dogs.

But her plans have been criticized as unfeasible by animal protection groups. They say breeds cannot by classified in accordance with perceived danger levels. They’ve called for a ban on the trade in dogs by private individuals.
